In Exodus 3 Moses encounters God.  During this divine-human exchange Moses asks God for his name.  God offers a mysterious name, a name that refuses to be pinned down, summed up, or fully deciphered by human imagination.  God says, "I Am who I Am!"

Jump ahead 1500 years.  A wandering rabbi from Nazareth amazes the desert crowds with his teaching and healings.  His influence threatens the power of the religious leaders, a threat that leads to their devising his destruction.  During one accusatory conversation they interrogate him, "Are you greater than our father Abraham?" (John 8:53)

Jesus responds, "Very truly I tell you, before Abraham was born I am" (John 8:58).  This statement was no mere reference to preexistence but an allusion to the divine name! Jesus was claiming to be God!

Luke Timothy Johnson says that John portrays Jesus as the "Holy Place where humans encounter God."  In other words, throughout the gospel of John, when Christ speaks, it is the word of God.  When Christ acts, it is the movement of God.  John carries us deep into the mystery of God by inviting us to see Jesus.  The seven "I Am" statements aid us in this journey of discovery.

"I Am BREAD" (John 6:35)

"I Am LIGHT" (John 8:12)

"I Am the DOOR" (John 10:7)
"I Am the SHEPHERD" (John 10:11)
"I Am the VINE" (15:1)
"I Am the RESURRECTION and LIFE" (John 11:15)
"I Am the WAY, TRUTH, and LIFE" (John 14:6)

Bible Verse of the Day

“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17) listen to chapter Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984 by International Bible Society

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5) listen to chapter Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984 by International Bible Society

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” (Ephesians 6:12-13) listen to chapter Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984 by International Bible Society

“So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.” (Luke 2:16-20) listen to chapter Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984 by International Bible Society
